The City of North Chicago was incorporated in 1909. Major employers include the Veteran's Administration Hospital, Abbott Laboratories, Complete Packaging Corp., and the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, the nation's only naval training facility.

Recreation -- The Foss Park District includes a challenging 18 hole golf course, numerous park sites totaling 213 acres, a community youth center, and a public swimming pool. Other recreational outlets include the Willow Glen 18 hole public golf course, operated by the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and the North Chicago Center for the Arts.

Schools -- North Chicago Consolidated School District #187 operates one Pre-K school, six K-5 Elementary Schools, two middle Schools, and a High School with a total enrollment of 5,100. Two private elementary schools are located within the city.

Housing -- North Chicago offers a diverse housing stock. The 2000 median house value was $100,400 and the median rent cost was $670. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2000)

Medical Facilities -- The Veteran's Administration Medical Center offers services to the region's veterans. University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School and its clinic provide medical care to the public. Medical care and treatment are also provided by St. Therese Medical Center and Victory Memorial Hospital in neighboring Waukegan.

Government Services -- Fire protection is provided by 30 full-time firefighters and two paid-on-call firefighters at two fire stations. The North Chicago Police Department has 45 sworn officers on staff.

Transportation -- Rail commuters use Metra's Chicago & North Western/North Line to commute to any of the numerous communities between Kenosha, WI and Chicago. Drivers can take U.S. Rte. 41 or Interstate 94. Various bus services are also available.
