One of Lake County's oldest communities and its first county seat, Libertyville was incorporated in 1882. Major employers include Motorola, Condell Medical Center, and the Solar Corp.

Recreation -- The Des Plaines River, winding along the eastern edge of the village, and three lakes within the village limits offer water recreation opportunities. Over 500 acres of village-owned parks and over 100 acres of Libertyville Township Open Space are also available. Other community facilities include The David Adler Cultural Center and Cook Mansion. The village features a 9 hole par three public golf course, two athletic clubs, and an indoor theater. Construction is beginning for a sports complex and golf learning center.

Schools -- Educational facilities include five elementary schools in Libertyville District #70 with an enrollment of 2,521 and two private elementary schools; some students attend Hawthorn District #73 with 3,521 students. Libertyville Community High School District #128 has 2,515 students.

Housing -- Libertyville features a mix of residential units. The 2000 median house value was $263,700 and the median rent cost was $835. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2000)

Medical Facilities -- The 187 bed Condell Medical Center and the Hawthorn Place Surgical Center are found in the village.

Government Services -- Fire Protection is provided by the Libertyville Fire Department's 33 full-time firefighters and 19 paid-on-call firefighters at three stations. The Libertyville Police Department's 44 sworn officers and 17 civilians provide police protection.

Transportation -- U.S. Rte. 41 and Interstate 94 provide access to Chicago. The Metra Milwaukee District/North Line commuter rail station is located in the downtown area. The new commuter rail station serves both the existing Milwaukee District/North Line and the Wisconsin Central Line.
